I'm looking to get the same kind of feel, but using my D700. Some of my best images were taken with a Kodak Brownie that I flipped the lens on, a Certo Phot, or Polaroid 420. I'm not searching for great image quality. Stuff that's kind of 'dirty', not high IQ, Something that would give me the feel of a flipped Kodak Brownie lens or the like. Yes! Petzvel lenses, WWII lenses with adapters.

Oddly enough on a Z6 with a FTZ, manual focusing using the Gear Rack mechanism becomes easier since it's further away from the body then when using a DSLRĪnd with some practice it's quite capable of giving sharp images (with added 'artistic' influences) Manual focus, swirly bokeh, definitely unusual (Waterford aperture plates, Gear Rack Focusing) He's looking for something a bit unusual. He's not looking for creamy bokeh or great IQ. Old manual lenses with swirly bokeh? Heavy vignetting? Distorted corners? Things like that. I think folks are missing what OP is asking for. The 85 1.4d was known as the cream machine for bokeh. If you don’t mind a zoom, the old 75-150 3.5e lens was a budget manual focus lens that had a constant 3.5 aperture and great IQ. Are you hoping to buy such a lens or are you just curious about what folks use when they want to go wild and crazy? Perhaps you could say a bit more about what you're hoping this thread will cover. With regard to Nikon manual focus lenses they have been discussed for almost ten years on the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread in this forum that is the largest thread on FM. George is right in pointing to the older lenses. If you're looking for aberrations in the finished image you'll likely want to forego the latest and greatest simply because Nikon has been working so hard to get rid of such idiosyncrasies. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder it is probably safe to say that what constitutes an "artistic" lens will also be very personal. This lens too can be converted to Nikon F mount with a Leica mount converter. Has a very distinctive high contrast look. This lens too can be converted to Nikon F mount with a Leitax mount converter.Ĭontax 100 f/3.5 - A wonderful small lens which is fantastic for landscapes. Olympus OM 100 f/2 ED - A really nice portrait lens with a short MFD and excellent bokeh. Leica R 90 f/2 (non-APO) - A cheaper version of the 80 f/1.4 with many of the same qualities, but tamed a bit by the narrower aperture. Does sharpen up nicely in the central region from f/2.8 and through about 2/3rds of the frame from f/4 or so. It is not as sharp as modern lenses wide open, but that is part of its charm. Leica R 80 f/1.4 - A lens with very nice bokeh and a classic portrait look. Most Leica R lenses including the ones I mention here can be converted to Nikon F mount with a mount converter from Leitax. It is excellent stopped down and has good central sharpness with decent bokeh wide open. This lens isn't that expensive and has a clear retro look.
Leica R 50 f/2 - I have a soft spot for the symmetrical six elements in six group double gauss 50s. Zeiss ZF/ZF.2 35 f/1.4 - This lens has very nice bokeh from wide open and despite some aberrations and astigmatism still has a really nice look, IMO. Nikon 180 f/2.8 ED AiS - a very underrated lens which can be very nice for portraits and for nature shots Nikon 105 f/2.5 Ai or AiS - a very classic lens with a great look for portraits Nikon 45 f/2.8 AI-P - really nice little lens with a retro look but still nice sharpness and bokeh Nikon 28 f/2.8 AiS - very short minimum focus distance (MFD) with great performance at that distance creates some wonderful artistic possibilities You can find them F mount modified for very little money. For the other Nikon bodies you can look for an Ai modified one.Īlso look at the 58mm Helios 44 - 2 Russian lenses. You can shoot it without issue on the Df or adapted to the Z bodies as well as just about any mirrorless out there. One of my favorite is the Nikkor-S Auto 5.8cm f/1.4. Not sure what body you have, but many of the old non-Ai Nikkor lenses have the look you describe. Both deliver what I think are very nice results. I like both my 28mm F1.4D and the 58mm F1.4G.
